HAITIAN ISLAND MINISTRIES

     Haitian Island Ministries (HIM) has been reaching out to one of if not the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, the island of Haiti, since 1994. Most people in Haiti live on less than $1 a day. There is no welfare or public assistance available. About 80% of the population lives in abject poverty and 70% of the population over the age of 15 cannot read or write.

     Dr. Steve Smith and his wife, Terry are the directors of missions for HIM and make regular trips to Haiti several times throughout the year. HIM has a medical program, a feeding program, and also builds schools and churches in some of the most remote areas of Haiti.

     The medical program provides free vitamins, medicines, and medical care for hundreds of thousands of Haitians. The feeding program, which began in the summer of 2002, feeds over 3,000 children from several villages each month. Most of the time this meal consists of beans and rice.

     At Sadlers Chapel United Methodist Church, we have been assisting HIM by fully funding the feeding program, with the help of our sister church Bell City UMC. Dr. Steve and Terry come to visit us every September and keeps us informed of what is going on in Haiti by monthly newsletters.

BREATH OF CHRIST MINISTRIES

     Breath of Christ Ministries was founded by Nick and Lucy Della Valle. They call themselves Missionaries to America: Storytellers for Christ. They share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through dramatic re-enactments. They have been to Sadlers Chapel United Methodist Church twice and have told the stories of Zaccheus and The Boy, the Loaves, and the Fishes. Bridging the centuries, Nick and Lucy open the eyes and hearts of listeners as they takes them back through a portal of time to when our Savior walked the earth.

     They don’t stop with the storytelling. They take walks across America. They walk 3,300 miles, 100 miles for every year that Jesus walked the earth. Nick does the walking and Lucy follows in the RV. Nick walks dressed in Biblical attire (robes, hoods, sandals, etc.) This is not the most amazing thing about Nick. He stands all of 4′8″. He says that his size and his attire enable to spread the Word of God as he is on one of his walks. Someone asks about the costume and that gives him the opening to share his faith.
